Nyla Free Designs 2021 Design Forecast

It’s that time of year when we anticipate the years trends, new products and design eye candy. Whether a colour of the year, a design detail or overall aesthetic, trends start to make their mark and either become a fleeting moment in time or a lifelong classic. While there is an ebb and flow to what’s in and what’s out, there are certain elements of design we start seeing more of and others we’re ready to kick to the curb.

The team at Nyla Free Designs has taken notice and we’ve put together our thoughts on top design trends for 2021. Below Nyla, Jackie, Brianna and Alex, all chime in on what they think will be on the watchlist this year.

Three dimensional, vertical lines, equally spaced, is a classic design detail I feel is making a resurgence. Formed in glass, wood, stone, and ceramics, this pattern, or texture if you will, can be found in fireplaces, lighting, cabinetry, furniture and accessories. Let your creative juices flow with all the opportunities to design with this detail in mind. I sure am!

In the past, I would steer clear of anything in the brown colour family. However, recently I am finding myself drawn to the dark, moody hue. Whether it be furniture, decor, paint, or fashion, the colour has definitely made a resurgence. I expect it to continue gaining momentum with respect to interiors, and predict we will see it more and more though 2021. Brown has found its way back into our homes and I have to say, I'm not mad!

These aren't the turned arm, wood trimmed, tufted blue floral velvet sofas of your grandma's den circa 1984. It's time to dive in and embrace the new conversation piece in our lives. No, we're not talking COVID, we're talking statement patterned sofas. A small piece of art on its own, selecting a statement fabric for to your space adds interest, personality and endless opportunities for pattern play with supporting textiles and elements. Simple stripes, bold florals or muted geometrics, it's time to just say au revoir to plain.

With this past year spent largely INSIDE our homes, my prediction is that there will be a draw to bring the outside in, in as many ways as possible! Natural materials & furniture are on my radar for 2021, from stones and fabrics to wood and even earthy colour tones, I can see this year bringing a new sense of intentionality towards natural material selections. Also, let's not forget about the abundance of plant life in our homes. I don’t think the plants are going anywhere soon!
