Design Evolution: Hand Painted Mural

We have the opportunity to create really special moments in the homes we design, and for that we are very grateful.

During the design development stage at Nyla Free Designs, we look at all of the details that will fully realize a room. There is very little left to determine past that point. The reason? A cohesive, thoughtfully designed space, where each design element compliments the other and decisions are made together, rather than piece by piece.

With all design details considered, we can then execute and implement efficiently, no back tracking. This hand painted mural is a great example of this.

Our client requested a wall treatment other than wallpaper, on the wall behind her daughters bed.

Right:

We gathered inspiration images, and fabric samples depicting the overall concept, and feel we hoped for, for the wall. This is an important step in design development, and also a really fun, and inspiring part of the process.

The creative juices flow and we have the opportunity to dive deeper into the the design process, bringing to life something truly custom, and special.

Along with the cherry blossoms, our client wanted to incorporate magnolias and bees. So charming! We worked alongside Interiors to Inspire to bring this idea to life. Once we had a solid concept, and colour story, a sample was created. We brought the sample to the space in an effort to map out the wall.

The blue tape identifies the height of the bed, nightstand and placement of the wall sconce. It was important to understand the placement of the furniture in order to determine the pattern of the wall mural.

Because all of the furniture had been selected for the space, we knew all of the necessary dimensions in order to perfectly place the mural, there were no uncertain details.

On the day of installation, more tape (shown in green) was applied to the wall to inform the flow, and layout of the mural. We wanted a layered feel, so the blue tape indicating the height lines became important once again, so that the branches and flowers felt connected to the furniture.

Let the fun begin! Watch the above little video as the first few brush strokes start to create the blossoms.

Above is a close up image of a portion of the hand painted mural, showing all three important features; cherry blossoms, magnolia and bumble bees. You can really get a sense of the hand painted quality of work. The layers of colour and texture add such a lovely dimension to this feature wall.

The result!
