Life at Home: Understanding Your Home

Discover How You Live & What You Love

Every project starts out with a dialogue in regards to wants vs. needs, likes vs. dislikes, as well as an understanding of our clients lifestyle and preferences, both individually and as a family. Information gathering is a critical element of the design process. Inspiration gathering is also a necessary step in moving to the design development stage.

Now that we’re all spending a lot more time at home, and in our homes, now is the best time to really pay attention to all the things you didn’t notice before. We’re giving you all the questions to ask if you’re contemplating any changes in your home.

Perhaps it’s recognizing things you love that you hadn’t noticed before. It might be confirmation of what’s not functioning, not comfortable, or simply bad design. It could also be embracing more of what you fell in love with when you first bought or built your home.

Whether it’s a new morning routine, a work-from-home schedule or family on top of each other, we’re all experiencing our homes in new ways. Now is the time to understand your home culture. From the function of the kitchen to the way the light comes in at 2pm, there’s so much information sitting right in front of you to begin making improvements to your home.

Personally, I’m very much enjoying coffee out of my favourite mug every morning. Previously this was reserved for the weekends as I would take a travel mug with me during the week for my morning commute. I now sit at my island, catch up on emails and get a plan together for the day. I’m loving this time!

I’m also relishing in the natural light that floods into our home. It’s one of my favourite things and what instantly made me say, this is the one! when we put an offer on the house 14 years ago.

As well, we’re spending far more time in a room that used to be a catch-all for random items. We have a small bonus room off our master bedroom, that was an unsightly space and inevitably became a “storage room”. Now outfitted with a TV, sofa, coffee table and two chairs, we’ve transformed it into a quiet space for reading, working or chilling out with a movie.

Because we recently renovated, our home is now functioning well and I can’t tell you the difference it has made to have cohesive and comfortable spaces for our family to spend time in. We’re living and enjoying it so much more.

How about you? How are you feeling about your home these days? With a new perspective you may be thinking some changes are in order. We’ve put together a comprehensive workbook to get your thoughts on paper and a good honest look at how you live and what you love.
