Elbow Park Modern Reveal: Study
Even with a custom designed new build there are challenges. The floor plan of a home is based on so many factors and sometimes spaces end up being larger (or smaller) than anticipated due to the overall footprint of the home. The office of our Elbow Park Modern project fell into this category.
Situated off the front entrance and removed from the rest of the home, the home office was a topic of conversation right from the start. With a large amount of space purely based on the layout of the home, our client was overwhelmed by the amount of space and concerned it would feel sparse, and disconnected.
The criteria for the room was to house two work surfaces, a seating area and small TV, all with a level of sophisticated masculinity. Once the layout of the room was determined, we set out to add layers to the space to give a sense of interest and cohesion.
A highlight of the space is the floor to ceiling windows on both east and west facing walls, and transom windows along the south side, offering a flood of light throughout the room at any time of the day as well as a connection to the outside.
An oversized flushmount fixture, centred on the bulkhead, offers another layer and draws your eye down to the seating area below.
In order to create an intimate space, we brought the ceiling down with a dark stained bulkhead which flows into a built-in display area for books and accessories. A built-in banquette style sofa transforms the space from office to lounge and becomes the anchor for a seating area with armless chairs an extra large coffee table and gorgeous area carpet. Who wouldn’t want to work in an environment like this?!
Two chairs flank the banquette in a menswear inspired grey window pane fabric. We chose armless chairs and low arms for the sofa to provide an open and welcoming feel to the space.
A rich teal velvet on the armless banquette is beautifully offset by the dark wood built-in behind. A large amount of display doesn't mean it needs to be filled. Negative space allows accessories to breathe and room to add more keepsakes as they are collected.
The final result - a polished, sophisticated and highly functional space to relax, work, have a conversation and enjoy a departure from the bustle of the rest of the home.
