Lately Loving: Rattan
Rattan is a natural, renewable resource made up of thin, pliable stems of palms often used to make furniture and accessories. Primarily originating from tropical regions in Asia, it is a valuable part of rural people’s livelihoods. While rattan has a summer-y feel, its classic texture and unique qualities never really go out of season or style.
We’ve rounded up some of our favourite design ideas to inspire you to include rattan into your home decor.
Its lightweight and durable structure allows it to form into many shapes. Rattan takes stain and paint similarly to wood, offering interest in colour and texture. It is also suitable for outdoor use making it a versatile product both indoor and out.
Incorporating a piece or two of rattan into your decor is a great way to add texture and a nod towards a casual beach-y vibe. And who doesn’t want the feeling of bringing the beach home, even if in a subtle way?
Even the slightest amount of rattan makes a difference to a space. For this fresh, modern beach-y vibe dining room in a West Vancouver home, we included a rattan/woven wood roman blind into the design. We love this whole feel!
In another project, the simple addition of the ROOST Matta rattan ottoman adds texture, interest and an unusual shape to the scheme of this living room.
In this particular room, we incorporated the Boho Daybed from CB2 in natural rattan for this little girls bedroom woodland inspired bedroom.
Add a little. Add a lot. Rattan is an easy addition to your interior whether living, dining, bedroom or exterior for the coming summer months, and beyond!
